GU10 Bulb, Spotlight Frame or Integrated LED: What Are You Buying?

Distinguish the light source, mounting frame and complete fitting, and check compatibility before ordering replacement lighting.

Spotlight product photos can look similar while showing very different items. A listing may sell a bulb, a mounting frame, a housing that needs bulbs, or a fitting with an integrated LED light source. Identify the part you need before comparing price or wattage.

A bulb is the light source

GU10 identifies a lamp base. It does not, by itself, tell you the brightness, colour or dimming support. Compare voltage, dimensions, lumens, kelvins and beam angle for the exact model. Philips product information illustrates that lamps sharing a base can differ in these details and their control method.

“Dimmable” is not a complete compatibility check. A lamp controlled through an app is not necessarily suitable for a conventional wall dimmer. Review the lamp and control instructions together.

A frame and a housing are different parts

A frame supports a lamp in position, but does not establish that the holder, power supply or bulb is included. A housing may contain one or more lamp holders and its own mounting or adjustment arrangement. Read the package contents on each listing.

For example, the twin GU10 spotlight housing is listed with bulbs sold separately, while the black spotlight frame is a mounting frame. These illustrate component types; a similar base does not confirm that every part fits together.

What does integrated LED mean?

Do not assume a fitting with an integrated light source contains a replaceable GU10 bulb. Ask about the exact model’s maintenance: can its light source or driver be replaced, by whom, and are parts available? Signify provides examples of serviceable luminaires and upgrade components, but these features do not apply to every LED fitting.

Your pre-order checklist

  • Are you buying a bulb, frame, housing or complete fitting?
  • Which parts are included and which are sold separately?
  • Do the base, voltage, wattage and dimensions match?
  • What cutout and recess depth, or surface-mount base dimensions, are required?
  • Do you need dimming, and is that control method supported?
  • What IP rating does the location require, and what does this model provide?

Photograph the existing fitting and lamp labels, and record measurements before ordering. Browse Lighting, the recessed downlight guide and the light-colour guide. Leave electrical connections and safety checks to a qualified installer.
