Caring for Chrome and Matte Black Taps

Bathroom and kitchen taps meet water and soap every day. Good care starts with the model and finish: colour alone does not identify the coating or the cleaning product it can tolerate. Keep the product name and care instructions before trying a new cleaner.

Start with gentle routine care

Wipe away water and soap residue with a clean, soft cloth, then dry the surface. GROHE’s care guidance recommends a little soap and a damp cloth, followed by rinsing and drying. Check your own tap manufacturer’s instructions, especially for coloured finishes.

Choose cleaner for the exact finish

Do not use chrome polish on matte black simply because both items are taps. Hansgrohe recommends suitable gentle cleaners, applying spray to a cloth rather than into product openings, and removing residue with water. Its guidance also identifies harsh acids and cleaners to avoid.

Manufacturers and coatings differ. Do not assume a vinegar recipe or general descaler suits every product, and do not mix cleaners. If the model’s instructions are unavailable, use gentle routine care and obtain finish-specific advice before trying stronger treatment.

Avoid turning a mark into a scratch

Do not scrape deposits with metal tools or an abrasive pad. First establish whether the mark is ordinary surface residue that comes off using approved routine care. Peeling, discolouration and scratches are not automatically fixed with stronger cleaner; photograph the area and contact the supplier.

Know when cleaning is not enough

Exterior cleaning does not repair a leaking connection or a persistently stiff handle. If the water pattern changes, consult the model’s aerator-care instructions or a plumber. Avoid tools that can scratch plated parts, and do not assume every aerator is removed in the same way.

Keep a simple care record

• Manufacturer, model reference and finish.
• A photo of the problem before further treatment.
• The cleaner used and how it was applied.
• Purchase receipt and the product’s warranty terms.
